For Boost Pet Food, a brand built on the principle of providing real food for real friends, packaging plays a vital role in communicating its premium positioning and standing out on increasingly competitive retail shelves.

About Boost Pet Food

Boost Pet Food was founded with a mission to improve the pet food industry by offering high-quality, human-grade meals made with better ingredients, less processing and no unnecessary fillers or additives.

Its freeze-dried Dog & Cat Kibble Plus ranges provide pet owners with the nutritional benefits of raw feeding in a convenient and accessible format. As a result, the brand has established a strong reputation within the premium pet food sector and secured listings with major UK retailers including Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

As Boost continued to grow, ensuring the consistency and quality of its packaging became increasingly important to support its premium brand image and retail presence.

Building on Strong Supply Chain Partnerships

A significant factor in Law Print & Packaging being selected for the project was the established relationship between Law Print and Boost’s co-packer, IFD.

Having worked closely together on numerous projects, both businesses understood each other’s technical requirements, production processes and quality expectations. This existing partnership enabled a smooth transition, as the packaging structure already being used for the freeze-dried product range had been successfully packed and processed by IFD.

The collaborative approach between all parties ensured that technical considerations could be addressed quickly and efficiently, minimising disruption and providing confidence throughout the project.

The Challenge: Maintaining Brand Integrity During a Print Process Change

While the packaging structure itself was proven, the print process presented a more complex challenge. Boost’s visual identity is highly distinctive, with colour forming a critical part of the brand’s recognition and shelf impact. Historically, the packaging had been produced using digital print technology. Moving production to rotogravure offered significant advantages in terms of consistency, efficiency and scalability, but it also introduced the challenge of reproducing the brand’s colours accurately within a different print process.

Complicating matters further, colour variation across previous digitally printed production runs meant there was no single, clearly defined colour standard. Determining what represented the ‘correct’ Boost brand colours required careful evaluation and collaboration. For a premium retail brand, even subtle colour differences can affect brand recognition and consumer perception, making colour accuracy a critical success factor for the project.

The Solution: Precision Colour Management and Rotogravure Expertise

Law Print & Packaging worked closely with both Boost and IFD to manage the transition from digital print to rotogravure while preserving the integrity of the brand. The project involved detailed colour assessment, extensive proofing and press optimisation to establish accurate and repeatable colour standards. By combining technical expertise with a thorough understanding of the brand’s requirements, Law Print was able to identify the most appropriate colour targets and translate them successfully into the rotogravure process.

Throughout development, particular attention was given to maintaining the vibrancy and character of the original design while taking advantage of the superior consistency and print quality that rotogravure offers. The result was a refined packaging solution that not only met the expectations of the Boost team but also delivered a more controlled and repeatable production outcome.

The Results

The completed Dog & Cat Kibble Plus packaging successfully combines premium visual appeal with the production benefits of rotogravure printing.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates the value of combining technical print expertise with close collaboration across the supply chain. By working in partnership with Boost Pet Food and IFD, Law Print & Packaging successfully delivered a packaging solution that preserved the integrity of a well-established premium brand while unlocking the quality and consistency advantages of rotogravure printing.

The result is packaging that not only looks exceptional on shelf but also supports efficient production, retail growth and long-term brand success—helping Boost continue its mission of providing better nutrition for pets and peace of mind for their owners.
